Setting Up Notifications
How to enable check-in reminders on desktop, Android, and iPhone so you never miss a window.
Why notifications matter
Consistency is the foundation of useful energy data. The more regularly you check in, the better your signals become. But remembering to log three times a day is exactly the kind of thing ADHD brains struggle with.
Push notifications solve this by sending you a gentle reminder at the start of each check-in window. You tap the notification, rate your energy, and you're done in ten seconds.
How to enable notifications
Notifications are set up in Settings (tap your profile, then scroll to the Notifications section). Here's what to do:
- Tap Enable Notifications
- Your browser will ask for permission. Tap Allow
- Three time pickers appear for your Morning, Afternoon, and Evening reminders
- Adjust the times to match your routine (defaults are 9:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 6:30 PM)
That's it. You'll get a push notification at each time you set.
Setting up on different devices
NeuroSpicy uses web push notifications, which work slightly differently depending on your device. Here's how to set up each one.
Desktop (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
This is the simplest setup:
- Go to Settings on the NeuroSpicy website
- Tap Enable Notifications
- When your browser asks for permission, click Allow
- Set your preferred times
- Done. You'll get desktop notifications at those times
If you accidentally clicked "Block," you'll need to reset the permission. Click the lock icon (or tune icon) in your browser's address bar, find "Notifications," and change it to "Allow." Then try enabling again.
Android (Chrome)
Android handles web push notifications well:
- Open NeuroSpicy in Chrome
- Go to Settings and tap Enable Notifications
- When Chrome asks for permission, tap Allow
- Set your times
- Notifications will appear in your notification shade like any other app
Tip: For the best experience, add NeuroSpicy to your home screen. In Chrome, tap the three-dot menu and select "Add to Home Screen." This makes it feel like a native app and ensures notifications work reliably.
iPhone and iPad (Safari)
iOS requires one extra step because Apple only supports web push notifications for sites that are added to your home screen.
Step 1: Add to Home Screen
- Open NeuroSpicy in Safari
- Tap the Share button (the square with the arrow pointing up)
- Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen
- Tap Add
Step 2: Enable notifications
- Open NeuroSpicy from the new home screen icon (not from Safari)
- Go to Settings
- Tap Enable Notifications
- When iOS asks for permission, tap Allow
- Set your times
Important: Notifications will only work when you open NeuroSpicy from the home screen icon. If you open it in Safari directly, push notifications won't be available.
If you don't see the "Enable Notifications" button, make sure you're running iOS 16.4 or later and that you opened the app from the home screen icon.
Multiple devices
You can enable notifications on more than one device. Each device gets its own subscription. To add another device:
- Open NeuroSpicy on the new device
- Go to Settings
- Tap Add This Device in the Notifications section
- Allow the notification permission
To remove a device, tap Remove This Device on that device.
Customizing your times
The default reminder times are:
- Morning: 9:00 AM
- Afternoon: 1:00 PM
- Evening: 6:30 PM
You can change these in Settings. The times are in your local timezone, and NeuroSpicy will skip the reminder if you've already logged a check-in for that window.
Pick times that match your natural transitions. If you start work at 7 AM, set your morning reminder for 7:30. If your evenings start at 5, set the evening reminder for 5:30. The closer the reminder is to your actual routine, the more likely you are to respond.
Troubleshooting
"Permission denied" error: You previously blocked notifications for NeuroSpicy. On desktop, click the lock/tune icon in the address bar, find Notifications, and change to Allow. On mobile, go to your device's notification settings for the browser or the NeuroSpicy web app.
No notification button on iPhone: Make sure you opened NeuroSpicy from the home screen icon, not from Safari. iOS only supports push notifications for home screen web apps.
Notifications stopped working: Try removing and re-adding the device in Settings. If you cleared your browser data, the push subscription may have been lost.
