
The ADHD Hunter-Gatherer Theory, Honestly
The hunter-in-a-farmer's-world story is a good story, and the hard evidence is thinner than the memes. You don't need an ancient alibi to take your brain seriously.
A friend sends you the TikTok. A guy in a beanie explains, warmly, that you are not broken. You are a hunter, born into a world of farmers. The distraction is a wide-angle threat scan. The impulsivity is fast pursuit. The restlessness is a body built to move across a landscape, not sit in a fluorescent box answering email. Something in your chest loosens, because for once the story isn't about what is wrong with you. It is about where you would have belonged. It lands so hard because it does a job nothing else has managed: it makes the shame make sense. But is it true?
What the evidence actually shows
Some of it points that way, gently. In a 2024 study, 457 people played an online berry-picking game, and the ones with more ADHD-like traits left depleted patches sooner and gathered more berries overall [1]. If these traits were being selected for, you'd expect the alleles to climb over time. Instead they fell. The frequency of ADHD-associated variants has steadily decreased since Paleolithic times, a signature of selection pushing against them, not for them [2]. The authors note this is still compatible with mismatch theory, where a trait that helped in one environment stops helping in a later one. But compatible is not proof, and the measured trend is a long, slow decline.

The hunter story is a good story, and it might even be partly right. Mismatch theory is a real framework. But notice what the story is doing: it is undoing shame, and it leans on a prehistory we can only squint at. The famous foraging game had unlimited berries. The ancient DNA shows the alleles going down, not up. The hunter story is a fine story to like, but it is too thin to hang your worth on. And you do not have to. You do not need an ancient alibi to take your brain seriously.
