
Your ADHD Boredom Is a Signal to Read, Not a Verdict on You
A 2025 study found people with ADHD traits score nearly two standard deviations higher on boredom proneness. The finding worth keeping: boredom is data about your attention, not a flaw in your character.
You know the exact moment. The task hasn't changed, the words on the screen are the same size they were five minutes ago, but something goes flat and your whole body starts hunting for a way out. A tab. Your phone. The fridge. You have done this a thousand times, and every time the verdict lands on you: not trying hard enough, not the kind of person who finishes things. A new study on ADHD boredom says that verdict is a misread.
What the study found
Researchers at the University of Tampa compared 88 young adults, 31 with elevated ADHD traits and 57 without, and measured boredom proneness against six computer tasks probing attention control and working memory [1]. The ADHD-trait group scored nearly two standard deviations higher in boredom proneness than the controls. They also did worse on several of the attention tasks, and the tightest links were sustained attention and interference control, the machinery you use to stay with something and to tune out the noise around it. When the researchers ran the numbers, attention control and working memory partly explained why the ADHD group got bored more, which suggests the boredom was tracking something real about how their focus worked.
It is one small study, and the authors are the first to say so: self-report boredom scales, a mostly-female college sample, no formal diagnoses, and a size they would happily double. Treat it as a good early read, not a closed case.

Here is the story you have been told about boredom: it is a preference, maybe a character flaw, evidence that you lack discipline or curiosity. That is the expected read. The study points at a different one. Boredom is often the surface label your brain slaps on a focus that will not hold. The researchers say it plainly: someone struggling to focus may call hard material boring rather than notice the attention difficulty underneath.
